Terms of use

Reading this journal means accepting the terms below. They set out what our writing is, how it may be reused, and where our responsibility ends.

In short: everything here is criticism rather than a guarantee, quotations with attribution are welcome, scores may not be used in advertising, and nothing is sold on this site.

The nature of our content

Everything published here is editorial opinion. A score is a summary of a judgement formed by playing a game to its end, and reasonable readers will disagree with some of those judgements. Nothing on these pages constitutes a warranty about how any piece of software will behave on your hardware, in your configuration or during your particular session.

Technical observations

Where an essay describes performance, it names the machines and the build tested. Software changes: an observation accurate on one version may be void on the next, and your results may differ from ours for reasons entirely outside the game. We publish corrections when we learn our figures were wrong, but we cannot promise every page reflects the newest release at the moment you read it.

Quotation and republication

Brief quotations in reviews, discussion, videos and articles are welcome, provided the source is attributed to The Longplay Review and the quotation is not edited in a way that reverses its sense. Reproducing an entire essay, translating one without permission, or using this journal's text as training material for commercial machine learning systems is not permitted.

Scores may not appear in advertising, on storefront pages or in any promotional material without written agreement. A number divorced from the essay that justifies it misrepresents what we published, and we treat that separation as a misuse of the work.

Images and trademarks

The photographs, illustrations and emblem used throughout this site were produced for it and remain ours. Names of games, studios, publishers and hardware appearing in essays belong to their respective owners and are used for identification and critical commentary. No affiliation with or endorsement by any of them is claimed.

No commerce

Nothing is sold here. There is no shop, no subscription, no membership tier, no donation mechanism and no advertising. No orders, payments, refunds, deliveries or returns exist in connection with this site, and any communication claiming to conduct such business in our name should be disregarded.

Availability

The journal is provided as it stands. We do not undertake that it will always be reachable, that back issues will remain online indefinitely, or that every internal link will survive a future reorganisation. Pieces may be revised, corrected, merged or withdrawn at the editor's discretion.

Limitation of liability

So far as applicable law permits, we accept no liability for loss or damage arising from reliance on anything published here, including purchases you subsequently regret. Criticism is an input to your judgement, not a replacement for it.

External destinations

Some essays cite work published on other sites. Those pages are maintained by their own authors, we cannot answer for what they contain or whether they will remain reachable, and once you follow such a link you are governed by their terms and not by these.

Amendments

These terms may be revised as the journal develops. The text on this page is the operative version, and continuing to read the site after a revision indicates acceptance of it.

Rights that cannot be excluded

Where consumer protection law in your jurisdiction confers rights that cannot be limited by agreement, nothing here restricts them, and the remaining provisions apply to the fullest extent permitted.
